    Spicy Mexican Clamato Michelada Recipe

Modified: Apr 30, 2024 by Susan Pridmore · This post may contain affiliate links · 9 Comments

For your next party, try this mildly spicy Clamato Michelada made with clamato juice and a light Mexican beer. It's spiced up with hot sauce and horseradish sauce, but it's up to you how spicy you want it!

The clamato juice adds a lot of flavor, so I highly recommend it instead of tomato juice. But if you want to keep it vegetarian, use tomato juice instead.

Cocktails are a great way to kick off any party, and with Cinco de Mayo coming up, this Clamato Michelada is a perfect alternative to Margaritas and Mojitos.

For more ideas for what to serve for Cinco de Mayo or any Mexican-themed party, check out my Vegetarian Cinco de Mayo roundup!

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

    • Just the right amount of spiciness from the hot sauce and horseradish sauce.
    • Super fast to make in 10 minutes.
    • Make the mix ahead without the beer, so it's party-ready.

    🧅 Main Ingredients + Notes

The secret to faster and easier meals often lies in the ingredients. For example, store-bought items and ingredients you make ahead and store in the refrigerator (or freezer) can turn a 60-minute recipe into a 30-minute meal or less.

For all of the ingredients, measurements, and directions, go to the Recipe Card at the bottom of this post.

    • Clamato juice - Tomato juice works fine as a substitute and keeps this cocktail vegetarian, but the clamato juice adds a lot of extra flavor if you consume some fish like I do.
    • Lime juice
    • Worcestershire sauce - To keep this vegetarian, use Annie's Vegan Worcestershire Sauce.
    • Soy sauce - Check the ingredients list to make sure the soy sauce doesn't include flavor enhancers from fish or meat.
    • Horseradish sauce
    • Hot sauce
    • Light beer - I use both Corona and Modelo Especial with great success.

🧊 Can I Make This Clamato Michelada Ahead?

Yes! Just make the mix without the beer and keep it in a jar in the refrigerator. Add the beer when you're ready to serve.

    💡Ideas for Possible Variations

If you use tomato juice instead of clamato juice, you may need to add some kosher salt, sea salt, or celery salt for additional seasoning.

I know! Crazy, right? I'm really not usually the type to rush the seasons. But I really want a juicer now 🙂

I hope Santa aka CM brings you your juicer. I love that Vitamix personnal blender. A Vitamix has been on my list for a while now one day it will happen. I love your Michelada or Bloody Mary. :Yum, and with fresh tomato juice it would be amazing.

Me too, Suzanne. One of the challenges is space here in the kitchen, so that'll definitely be a consideration.

I hope you get a juicer, and the one you want, for Christmas, after all you are giving sufficient notice.

I love a good bloody mary and this lighter one sounds perfect. Make sure you send him plenty of good hints/links/pictures glued to his head if he's anything like my husband 😉
