Easy Avocado Cream Sauce with a Kick

Modified: May 9, 2023 by Susan Pridmore · This post may contain affiliate links · 15 Comments

This avocado crema recipe is a slightly spicy version of a delicious creamy tangy favorite! The combination of lime, garlic and a dash of chipotle in adobo sauce makes this sauce unique, and perfect on sandwiches, pasta, arepas, or your Tuesday night tacos.

All you need is 10 minutes and 5 ingredients, and you have a sauce you'll use on so many dishes.

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

    • Make it in 10 minutes with 5 ingredients.
    • No fancy ingredients.
    • If you're a fan of guacamole, this is a creamy sauce version.
    • There are so many ways to use it. See the below section on How to Use Avocado Cream.

    🧅 Main Ingredients + Notes

The secret to faster and easier meals often lies in the ingredients. For example, store-bought items and ingredients you make ahead and store in the refrigerator (or freezer) can turn a 60-minute recipe into a 30-minutes meal or less.

All of the ingredients, measurements and directions for this creamy avocado sauce are in the Recipe Card at the bottom of this post.

    • Avocados - fully ripe, but not overly soft. This is the main ingredient, obviously, so the avocados need to be very good quality.
    • Light sour cream - you can use heavy sour cream, but I use the light version.
    • Garlic cloves
    • Fresh lime juice
    • Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

    🔪 Recommended Equipment

    • Either a food processor, fitted with a metal blade or a high-speed blender

    💡Ideas for Possible Variations

    • Use plain Greek yogurt or store-bought traditional Mexican crema in place of the sour cream.
    • Eliminate the chipotle peppers in adobo.
    • Add fresh cilantro to the sauce.
    • Jalapeño peppers are much less spicy than chipotle peppers in adobo, and are a great way to introduce a little heat to this creamy sauce. The one drawback is their firm texture. Therefore, I recommend roasting, seeding and peeling the pepper first. That way it will purée well into a creamy texture, rather than ending up with a sauce with some jalapeño chunks. Start with ½ jalapeño to start with, and add more according to your own preferences.

🍽 Ways to use avocado cream sauce

    • Avocado cream sauce aka avocado crema goes great with most Tex-Mex and Mexican dishes. Drizzle on top of burritos, tacos, and southwestern salads (I like to use a squeeze bottle for this).
    • Mix with a little olive oil to create a salad dressing.
    • Add as a sandwich spread to arepas.
    • Toss with pasta.
    • Use as a dipping sauce for tortilla chips or roasted veggies, such as roasted bell peppers.

    👩‍🍳 Storage Tips

Avocados turn brown through an oxidation process, so it's important to keep this sauce in an airtight container. Refrigerate and use within 4 days.

Stick the acocado pit into the jar with the sauce, that will help keep it from turning.
